Same-sex marriage begins in Vermont

Back in April, Vermont became the first state in the USA to legislate for same-sex marriage. Today, that law finally came into effect, and the first of those marriages was celebrated, with couples queuing to exchange vows at midnight.

Strangely, the world hasn't ended. There is a distinct lack of news pictures from Vermont showing burning cars and people committing sodomy and bestiality in the streets (a favoured "argument" of the homophobic). Instead, life continues normally. But those people are happier, and the US is a slightly better and more equal place than it was yesterday.

Take that, bigots!
